South Dakota Governor Rounds Talks About Flood Preparations
3:21 pm, 3/10/10
South Dakota Governor Mike Rounds made a stop in Aberdeen on Wednesday to discuss spring flooding preparations and said the probability of a major spring flood in and around the Aberdeen area is 98 percent or greater. Governor Rounds said they are making preparations with local officials to have resources available in case flooding does occur. Governor Rounds also said FEMA is ready to offer assistance just like they did a few years ago. Scott Meintz, Director of Emergency Management for Brown County talked about the specific areas where we might see flooding in the area. He said there's a 98 percent chance of major flooding along the James River, and a 50 percent chance of moderate flooding along the Elm River. Meintz also reminded everyone to prepare now for potential spring flooding by making sure personal belongings are moved out of the basement. Meintz also said it's important to have a working sump pump, and possibly an emergency backup generator.
