Joel Swanson
General Manager
CRMC

My radio career began shortly after I got out of the Marine Corps, when I went to work in the sales department at WQPM in Princeton, Minnesota in 1975. Like many in the industry, I caught the radio bug quickly and later spent 3 years as the General Manager at KDMA in Montevideo, MN; followed by 12 years as General Manager of KTRF and KSNR in Thief River Falls, Minnesota, and 10 years as General Manager of KEYZ and KYYZ in Williston, North Dakota, and KTHC in Sidney, Montana. When it was time to move east to get closer to family, Dakota Broadcasting in Aberdeen was the perfect opportunity, and I became the General Manager of KMOM and KABD on September 1, 2010.

When it comes to RADIO, I believe in Local, Local, Local and Community Involvement. I have served as President of three Chambers of Commerce and two Rotary Clubs, and on numerous community boards and committees.

My wife Donna and I have 2 sons and 3 daughters and so far they have given us 13 grandsons that we are very proud of. The live in the Twin Cities, St. Cloud, Bismarck and Enid, Oklahoma; and hopefully we will see alot more of them from now on.

Kate Sharp
Office Manager

I grew up in a small town in upstate New York, surrounded by the beautiful Berkshire Mountains. I have always had a passion for music and growing up not far from New York City and Boston was like a dream. In my early twenties, however, I moved halfway across the country to my “home away from home”, Aberdeen. Once here, I completed my Business Management degree at Northern State University, and not too long after that I landed what has turned out to be a truly fantastic job at Dakota Broadcasting. I work here as the Office Manager/Traffic Director for both of our radio stations. I’m sure you already have some sympathy for me after you have looked through the bios on-line, and listened to some of my co-workers on the radio, but trust me when I tell you that they are all wonderful to work with. We have a family-like atmosphere at Dakota Broadcasting which makes me actually love coming to work every day. Outside of work I am thrilled to spend my time with my wonderful fiancé Matt (also an east-coaster, and my college sweetheart), and my cute, smart and talented son Alex. If you have any questions regarding our stations, feel free to email me. I look forward to hearing from you!

Terri and I met in high school. Terri was the “little sister” of one of my friends. I quickly found I enjoyed spending more time with her than my friends and we began dating when I was a senior and she a junior. We both attended the University of South Dakota and in 1982 I asked her to be my friend for life. We were blessed with three children, Scott, Amie and Lisa. After six years in the Navy, Scott is now settled in Sioux Falls and engaged to be married in the summer of 2012. Amie lives in Sioux Falls as well. She is married, a great elementary teacher and blessed us with two Grandsons, Dylan and Evin. Our youngest, Lisa, lives in Lincoln NE. She graduated from UNL and is also engaged to be married in the fall of 2012.

I got my first job in radio in the early 80’s at KXRB AM and KIOV FM in Sioux Falls. My dad owned a small business in Sioux Falls at the time and was getting fantastic results from his radio advertising. When his radio rep moved into management I applied for her job. After seeing the results dad got with radio I felt it had to be the easiest thing in the world to sell. In 1991 I accepted a position as Sales Manager with Sorenson Broadcasting at their Yankton stations. I learned a lot about being a great small market broadcaster from the Sorenson management team lead by Dean Sorenson. In 2000, Sorenson Broadcasting sold the stations to Waitt Radio and Waitt asked us to move to Norfolk NE to run KNEN in Norfolk. I continued my friendship with Dean Sorenson and shared with Dean my and Terri’s goal of someday owning our own stations. In 2007 that dream became a reality when Dakota Broadcasting was formed with the help of our partners, Dean Sorenson and Duane Butt. Duane is also a long term South Dakota Broadcasters. Dakota Broadcasting began with the building of KMOM and KABD in Aberdeen. Since then Dakota Broadcasting has grown to 11 stations with the addition of 7 FM and 2 AM stations in northwest Iowa. We strive to continue the small market radio philosophies learned while working for Sorenson Broadcasting. That is, we are here to serve the community. Our mission statement is pretty simple, “To be the voice of truth, integrity, inspiration and service to others.”
