Pierre, SD - The Department of Human Services announced today that Carol Ruen, Assistant Director for the South Dakota Department of Human Services Division of Developmental Disabilities, was awarded the Patriotic Employer Award for her support of Sergeant Cory Anderson of the Alpha Battery 1/147th Field Artillery Unit based out of Aberdeen, SD.
Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve (ESGR) is a Department of Defense agency established in 1972 to develop and maintain employer support for Guard and Reserve service. The Patriotic Employer Award was created by this agency to publicly recognize individuals who provide outstanding patriotic support and cooperation to their employees who serve in the nations's Guard and Reserve units. Ms. Ruen was nominated by Sergeant Anderson for being highly supportive while he was deployed with the National Guard and worked on flood related Guard efforts in Pierre this past summer.
The award was presented by Brigadier General Homer Harding (Ret.), an ESGR representative, to Ms. Ruen on behalf of the Office of the Secretary of Defense Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve as a Patriotic Employer for Ms. Ruen contributing to National Security and Protecting Liberty and Freedom by Supporting Employee Participation in America's National Gaurd and Reserve Force.
Supportive supervisors are critical to maintaining the strength and readiness of the nation's Guard and Reserve units. The nation's Reserve components (all National Guard members and Reserve forces from all branches of the military) comprise approximately 46 percent of our total available military workforce. Our Reserve forces are spending more time away from the workplace, supporting a demanding operations tempo and training to maintain their mission readiness.
The South Dakota ESGR awards between 400 to 500 Patriotic Employer Awards across the state each year.
