Regents Honor Student Organizations

RAPID CITY, S.D. – Student organizations from Black Hills State University and the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology were recognized for their outstanding academic, community, and organizational work by the South Dakota Board of Regents this week.

Student organizations honored at BHSU were:

Award for Academic Excellence – The Political Science Association promotes student involvement in the political application of current ideologies and events. Coffee events are sponsored monthly, which focus on particular topics of political or social interest. For example, a discussion on the Ground Zero-Islamic Cultural Center was presented during a Constitution Day celebration in September.

Community Service Award – The Sociology and Human Services Club educates students about their social responsibilities, while offering professional development opportunities for students interested in sociology and human services careers. The group is currently working with a Big Brothers/Big Sisters program called Campus Kids. It connects children in the community with college students in mentoring relationships.

Award for Organizational Leadership Buzz Marketing offers professional marketing and advertising assistance to on-campus organizations and the community. This group, which focuses on bridging relationships and networking opportunities, is involved with many other student organizations, the campus administration, campus events, and local businesses.

Student organization award winners from SDSMT were:

Award for Academic Excellence – The Aurum, published by and for students, is the official student newspaper on the School of Mines’ campus. Not only does the newspaper report about the academic environment on campus, but the skill set of its staff members is significantly enhanced through assignments related to writing, photography, editing, and advertising. Teamwork and networking opportunities also are emphasized.

Community Service Award – The SDSMT Rotaract Club of Rapid City was chartered by Rotary International in May 2010, and is the only Rotaract Club among Board of Regents’ institutions. Community service projects include Storybook Island, United Way Day of Caring, the Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service food drive, and Kids Against Hunger. During spring break, students traveled to Chile to test a portable water filtration project they are developing for Third World countries.

Award for Organizational Leadership – The American Association of Mechanical Engineers offers its members leadership skill building through outreach activities at elementary and middle schools, which are designed to encourage young students’ interest in science and engineering. The group also hosts industry presenters during a campus career fair. Over the past two years, SDSMT students have placed first in district design competitions, as well as in the top five in national and international competitions.
