JUNCTION CITY, S.D. – An Elk Point, S.D., man died and an Iowa driver received serious injuries in a two-vehicle crash on Wednesday, Jan. 4, at the intersection of S.D. Highway 50 and 473rd Avenue east of Interstate 29 near Junction City.
Lawrence Brewer, 92, was driving a 1996 Chevrolet S10 southbound on 473rd Avenue and failed to stop at the stop sign before crossing Highway 50. The Chevrolet collided with an eastbound 2005 Ford F450 truck driven by Jerod Lee Welch, 36, of Westfield, Iowa. Brewer was thrown from the vehicle and died at the scene. Welch suffered serious, non-life threatening injuries. Neither driver was wearing a seatbelt.
The South Dakota Highway Patrol is investigating. Union County Sheriff’s Office, Clay County Sheriff’s Office and Elk Point Fire and Emergency Medical Service assisted.
