Humboldt Woman Dies in Four-Vehicle Crash Near Alexandria

ALEXANDRIA, S.D. – A Humboldt, S.D., woman died in a four-vehicle crash Wednesday, Jan. 25, on Interstate 90 about four miles east of Alexandria.

The crash happened as westbound vehicles followed a 2006 Sterling snowplow driven by Kevin Wayne Tietz, 41, of Mitchell. The Department of Transportation plow was traveling about 15 mph as it spread a salt product. Visibility was limited by fog to 100 feet to 200 feet.

A 2011 Chevrolet pickup pulling a camper trailer and driven by David E. Schaefer, 62, of New Paris, Ohio, traveling about 60 mph, struck the rear of the snowplow. The vehicle and camper spun sideways and covered much of the driving surface.

A 2005 Pontiac Bonneville driven by Krista Lynn Serrao, 37, of Humboldt, was traveling behind the pickup and camper. It is believed the Pontiac collided with the camper and spun into the path of a following vehicle. That vehicle, a 2011 Kenworth semi-truck driven by Byron Roger Behm, 65, of Bellevue, Neb., struck the Pontiac.

Serrao was dead at the scene. None of the other drivers were injured. All drivers were wearing seatbelts. Poor visibility, icy road conditions, speed and following too closely are considered to be contributing factors.

The South Dakota Highway Patrol is investigating. Hanson County Sheriff’s Office, McCook County Sheriff’s Office and Hanson County Emergency Management assisted.
