ABERDEEN, SD: Beginning in the fall 2012, Presentation College will become a Division III Independent Member of the National Collegiate Athletics Association (NCAA). Currently, PC is a member of Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC).
“Becoming an Independent NCAA Division III Member will allow us increased flexibility in growing Saints Athletics. We want this change to be the best option for our students,” says Dr. Margaret Huber, President of Presentation College.
In the past, Presentation has faced challenges fielding complete teams. Recently, the men’s and women’s soccer programs were suspended by the UMAC Council of Presidents for the 2011-12 academic year because of insufficient roster sizes.
“We feel this decision benefits both Presentation College and the UMAC,” says Bob Schuchardt, Interim Athletic Director and Vice President for Student Services. “All the schools in the UMAC continue to be very supportive of our students.”
Corey Borchardt, UMAC Commissioner, says “The UMAC is grateful for Presentation’s contributions to the conference during its decade of being part of the league. As a member of the conference, the Saints have achieved championships in multiple sports, earned numerous team and individual academic all-conference awards, and have consistently featured individual student-athletes on our all-conference teams.”
With Independent membership, the minimum number of sports offered is dependent upon school enrollment, and a minimum number of contests are required for each sport. The college will continue its current athletic offerings, including men’s and women’s soccer. All sports will be eligible for postseason play in the NCAA Division III.
“We remain committed to the core values of Division III Athletics of ‘discover, develop and dedicate,’” Schuchardt says. “Providing the best student experience remains our top priority.”
