Pierre, S.D. - Secretary JR LaPlante announced today that the South Dakota Department of Tribal Relations will host State Tribal Relations Day at the Capitol on Tuesday, Feb. 28, 2012.
"It's important to have a day during the legislative session that recognizes the accomplishments of tribal governments and tribal members," Secretary LaPlante said. "This event will give state and tribal leaders the opportunity to learn about each other and exchange ideas that can lead to improved intergovernmental relations."
The theme of the event is tribal economic development.
The observance will begin with a tribal listening session at the State Visitor Center near Capitol lake from 8:30-11:30 a.m. CST, followed by a ceremony in the Capitol Rotunda from 11:45 a.m. to 1 p.m. that includes opening remarks by Gov. Dennis Daugaard, remarks from tribal leaders, and a live performance by the Sisseton Wahpeton singers and dancers. Lunch will be served from 1-2 p.m.
